How to Winterize Your Mower (Before You Park It)

Proper winterization prevents the most common spring startup problems. Here's what to do before you park equipment for the season.

1. Stabilize or drain the fuel

Add fuel stabilizer and run the engine a few minutes to circulate it, or run the tank dry — either prevents varnish buildup in the carburetor over winter.

2. Change the oil

Used oil holds combustion byproducts that are more corrosive over a long idle period than fresh oil.

3. Clean or replace the air filter

Start the season with a clean filter rather than finding out it's clogged in spring.

4. Remove the battery (riding equipment)

Disconnect and store on a trickle charger/maintainer if possible, or at minimum store somewhere that won't freeze and check the charge monthly.

5. Clean the deck and check the belt

Caked grass clippings hold moisture and accelerate rust; inspect the deck belt for cracking while it's off-season and order parts now rather than in the spring rush — see our deck belt cross-reference guide.

6. Store in a dry, covered location

Moisture is the enemy of both the engine and the deck. A tarp is better than nothing if a shed or garage isn't available.
